Who's Who

Susikaran James - Priest in Charge

I have been at St. Simon's, Southsea, since 1st of May 2016. I was born and brought up in India, hence see myself as a missionary to England. I am married to Ruth, and blessed with two boys. As a family every single year we came to Portsmouth for holidays and were thrilled when we realised God is calling us to take part in building His kingdom in Southsea. My main motto in life is "Treasuring Christ above all" and I am passionate about using every single opportunity to introduce someone to Jesus. God has promised me great things and I am looking forward to the fulfillment of His promises.  I love new challenges and find the occasional moment’s sleep.  I have never, however, fallen asleep during my own sermons and I am a keen cricketer.

Bob Mason

Following retirement from his last post as Rector of Poole Parish Church Bob, with his wife Mel, moved to Southsea where he has been happy helping at St Simon’s. Bob is involved in the Pastoral Team, Care-home Services, Sunday Suppers and Breakthru.  He also regularly presents the Sunday morning Service on Angel Radio. Bob enjoys writing and local history, and keeping in touch with old friends.

Mike Taylor - Churchwarden

I have recently retired as a teacher of chemistry and I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve St Simon’s as a church warden. I was brought up in a Christian home and became a Christian whilst at university. I’m married to Ruth and have a grown up son and daughter. I’m interested in the history of cinema and enjoy the music from the jazz age of the 1920’s and 30’s. I may also be found riding around on old buses or pottering around with my stamp collection when I have a moment to spare.

Hugh Mason - Churchwarden

In addition to being churchwarden, I am a member of the deanery and diocesan synods and Bishop's Council.  I am also a City Councillor and a director of the Hampshire Credit Union, which roles I see as implementing my Christian faith.  Further afield, my wife and I have a house and small farm in eastern Uganda where we also oversee a community based radio station and are helping build a church. I enjoy theatre, music, walking, and talking late into the evening with friends.

Bryn Jenkins - Youth Pastor

I am the youth pastor at St Simons Church, I started in September 2016. I grew up in this church as a youth, and God bought me back to it to grow the next generation! I studied Sociology at University of Leeds and then was an Intern at City Life Church for a year. I love music of all different genres, and I play guitar and sing. I have been leading worship in various churches for around 8 years, and I love it! I’m also in a band and play venues inside and outside of Portsmouth.  I am excited about giving back to a church that has given so much to me, and I hope to inspire a new generation to have a relationship with Jesus.

Lorna Sandland - Community Development Worker

I began working at St Simon’s January 2015. I love working with people from all walks of life. My passion is to see lives transformed through the Gospel by being actively engaged in serving our community in practical ways, like Sunday Suppers and Breakthru.  My husband and I love practicing hospitality. We are currently renovating a house and are looking forward to having a kitchen, after 18 months of none!  I love spending quality time with people and building relationships over a decent coffee.

Mick Walters - Administrator

I'm a local (Portsmouth) born-and-bred person, married to Dinah with two adult children.  I came to St. Simon's to hear our wedding banns being read and decided to stay - that was over 30 years ago.  Following a career in IT, I started working as the administrator here in 2012.  I'm sometimes the first point of contact that people have with St. Simon's as the "reception" person or by phone/e-mail.

In my spare time, I like walking, badminton and cycling.  I also enjoy cooking and photography.

Jo Crawley - Safeguarding Officer

I have been part of St Simon's for the last two years since I moved back to Portsmouth with my husband Mark and our two girls Erin and Ava. We previously lived in Southampton where I studied to become a qualified children’s Social Worker.

I love living in Southsea and can often be found down the beach! I enjoy baking cakes and listening to music as well as spending time with friends and family.

Michelle McGannan - Safeguarding Officer

I have been part of St Simons since 2014, after moving back to Portsmouth where I grew up. I work in nurse education and development, and have previously lived in London, Surrey and Uganda.

It’s great to be back living near family, especially my young niece and nephew whom I see regularly. I really enjoy living in Southsea, especially walking by the sea and spending time with friends.

Andrea Grainger - Children and Families' Pastor

After a year covering Sunday mornings as Maternity Cover, I was delighted in September 2017 to be offered the position as Children and Families Pastor. I’ve been a member of St Simons for just over ten years and was drawn to the church with a babe in arms based on the children’s provision. Now here I am with a strapping ten year old joining the team to help it continue to develop and flourish. Originally I trained as a nursery nurse but have most recently been working with autistic children in a local special needs school.  Jake and I both love camping and beach barbecues.  Now I’m joining the Little Shipmates team I’m looking forward to brushing up my cake baking skills to share on Monday mornings.
