Who's Who

In no particular order...

Bob Mason

Following retirement from his last post as Rector of Poole Parish Church Bob, with his wife Mel, moved to Southsea where he has been happy helping at St Simon’s. Bob is involved in the Pastoral Team, Care-home Services, Sunday Suppers and Breakthru.  He also regularly presents the Sunday morning Service on Angel Radio. Bob enjoys writing and local history, and keeping in touch with old friends.

Mike Taylor - Churchwarden

Just over two years ago I retired as a teacher of chemistry and I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve St Simon’s as a church warden. I was brought up in a Christian home and became a Christian whilst at university. I’m married to Ruth and have a grown up son and daughter. I’m interested in the history of cinema and enjoy the music from the jazz age of the 1920’s and 30’s. Life is never dull and now I'm retired I seem to be busier than ever!

Hugh Mason - Churchwarden

In addition to being churchwarden, I am a member of the deanery and diocesan synods and Bishop's Council.  I am also a City Councillor and a director of the Hampshire Credit Union, which roles I see as implementing my Christian faith.  Further afield, my wife and I have a house and small farm in eastern Uganda where we also oversee a community based radio station and are helping build a church. I enjoy theatre, music, walking, and talking late into the evening with friends.

tba - Youth Pastor

Lorna Sandland - Community Development Worker

I began working at St Simon’s January 2015. I love working with people from all walks of life. My passion is to see lives transformed through the Gospel by being actively engaged in serving our community in practical ways, like Sunday Suppers and Breakthru.  My husband and I love practicing hospitality. We are currently renovating a house and are looking forward to having a kitchen, after 18 months of none!  I love spending quality time with people and building relationships over a decent coffee.

Mick Walters - Administrator

I'm a local (Portsmouth) born-and-bred person, married to Dinah with two adult children.  I came to St. Simon's to hear our wedding banns being read and decided to stay - that was over 30 years ago.  Following a career in IT, I started working as the administrator here in 2012.  I'm sometimes the first point of contact that people have with St. Simon's as the "reception" person or by phone/e-mail.

In my spare time, I like walking, running, badminton and cycling.  I also enjoy cooking and photography.

Vicky Bell - Safeguarding Officer

I have had the privilege of being part of St Simon’s church since 2016, having moved from Nottingham where I had been part of church communities since I was a teenager. I’ve been involved in Pastoral Care since my late teens and spent 7 years working in Spain using and developing these skills. I have since trained as a Counsellor and Supervisor for both Counsellors and those providing Pastoral Care; currently I work in these areas having specific speciality with Children and Young People.

You will often see Harry (my dog) and I enjoying walks (he’ll often be swimming) along the seafront…………….my love of this being a great surprise to me, having previously only thought of the seaside linked to sandy sandwiches!

Andrea Grainger - Children and Families' Pastor

After a year covering Sunday mornings as Maternity Cover, I was delighted in September 2017 to be offered the position as Children and Families Pastor. I’ve been a member of St Simons for just over ten years and was drawn to the church with a babe in arms based on the children’s provision. Now here I am with a strapping ten year old joining the team to help it continue to develop and flourish. Originally I trained as a nursery nurse but have most recently been working with autistic children in a local special needs school.  Jake and I both love camping and beach barbecues.  Now I’m joining the Little Shipmates team I’m looking forward to brushing up my cake baking skills to share on Monday mornings.
